Millions of Beijingers have been asked to work from home as the capital city doubles down on efforts to tame the Omicron variant.

Authorities have sealed off more than 60 subway stations, most of them in Chaoyang district, the epicenter of the latest wave of Covid-19 cases.

Other public transport services, including buses and taxis, are also unavailable in Chaoyang and locked down areas in other districts.

Beijing city reported 41 Covid-19 cases on Monday, five of them asymptomatic, after the third round of mass testing involving nearly 20 million people ended on Saturday.

Chaoyang district – where 40 percent of the 400 cases in the current wave have been found – will carry out a further three rounds of tests from Tuesday to Thursday, local officials said on Monday.

The district, an affluent area that is home to some 3.5 million people, had earlier said it would conduct two rounds of mass testing on May 1 and 3, after completing three rounds in April.
